HC Deb 16 February 1970 vol 796 cc8-9
13. Mr. Anderson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what assistance his Road Safety Unit has given to local high-way authorities since it was formed on 1st April, 1968?

Mr. E. Rowlands

Forty-one separate local accident studies have been or are being carried out with the co-operation of the police and local authorities mainly in South Wales since approximately two-thirds of the accidents in the Principality occur in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. A report on the causes of fatal road accidents involving children was issued during 1969.

Mr. Anderson

Is not a first-rate example of such work that at Cwmbran in Monmouthshire? What attempt is made to follow up this analysis of the causes of accidents?

Mr. Rowlands

It is the job of the Road Safety Unit, in conjunction with local authorities, to offer effective remedies for accidents. As it takes one or two years to see how well they are working out, we have not yet had a follow_up investigation. We intend that there shall be one.
