§ 46. Mr. Alec Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Wales whether he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy concerning the whole transport position in Wales.
§ Mr. Peter ThomasIt is the Government's policy that, having regard to social 938 and economic costs and benefits, there should be a satisfactory provision of public transport services; and also that the road system should be modernised.
§ Mr. Alec JonesWould the Secretary of State consider calling a special conference of Welsh local authorities to discuss the whole transport position of Wales since many local authorities, particularly local education authorities, are now becoming disturbed at the rising cost of conveying children to school and the threats to the rural bus services of Wales?
§ Mr. Peter ThomasI shall certainly consider conferring with local authorities on this matter. The Welsh Council is at the moment looking at the particular problem of transport in rural areas in Wales.
§ Mr. John MorrisIn view of the right hon. and learned Gentleman's odd replies to this Question last time we discussed it, may I ask whether he is being consulted by his right hon. Friend the Minister for Transport Industries about the future of these socially necessary railway lines in Wales, and when will grants for them be announced?
§ Mr. Peter ThomasI am frequently in contact with my right hon. Friend about transport needs in Wales.
