HC Deb 20 April 1970 vol 800 cc3-4
5. Mr. Ifor Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many local authorities in Wales have taken advantage of the new provisions of the Housing Act 1969 regarding the improvement of older houses; and how many have taken no action.

Mr. George Thomas

At least one-third of the housing authorities in Wales are actively pursuing proposals for area improvement under the Act.

Mr. Davies

While I appreciate my right hon. Friend's reply, may I ask whether he is aware that the success of the Housing Act, 1969, depends almost entirely on the full co-operation of the local authorities? Will he consider calling a conference of the chairmen of local authority housing committees to draw attention to this vital matter?

Mr. Thomas

Ministers from the Welsh Office have addressed three conferences of housing authorities in Wales on this subject. Six authorities have already declared improvement areas, 29 have made considerable progress in selecting potential areas for improvement, and a further 21 have discussed their preliminary ideas with the Welsh Office.
