HC Deb 16 April 1970 vol 799 cc1565-6
25. Mr. Milne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will obtain a report from the Chief Constable as to how many personal radio sets were available to police officers in Northumberland in September, 1969, and the comparable figure for 1965.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I am informed that the figure in September, 1969, was 518; the comparable figure in September, 1965. was 10.

Mr. Milne

Is my hon. Friend aware that we are very pleased with those figures, because they show the improved effectiveness of an already well-organised and efficient police force?

Mr. Rees

They also prove that anyone who looks at the question of law and order simply with the number of policemen in mind is ignoring the vast re-equipment which has taken place in the last five years.
