asked the Secretary of State for Wales what additional moneys have been allocated to each of the highway authorities in Wales as a winter programme for improvement and maintenance to be completed by 31st March, 1970.

Would the Secretary of State kindly look up the figure for Brecon-shire and Radnorshire? Will he be able to increase the amount because of possible redundancies in Breconshire?

Mr. Thomas

I always try to help my hon. Friend because he is so reasonable. I must point out that the amounts allocated to Breconshire and Radnorshire for road works this year represent the same percentage of the total available for roads as last year, namely 4 per cent.

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that the cuts-back in road maintenance over the past few years have had a very great effect upon the standards of roads in all counties of Wales? Why is it that he could not
