§ 40. Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Lord President of the Council if he will make arrangements for a rapid reading course in the House of Commons for Members of Parliament.
§ Mr. PeartI do not think it necessary for the House to provide this facility. Members who wish to take such courses will no doubt make their own arrangements.
§ Mrs. ShortBut, in the interests of increasing the productivity of Members of Parliament, some of whom need it, does my right hon. Friend not think that he might reconsider this, in view of the fact that, after only perhaps two or three lessons, reading speed could be doubled, which would be very useful?
§ Mr. PeartI note this, but one can apply this to courses of shorthand, typing and other things. I think that my reply is sensible and that my hon. Friend knows it.
§ Mr. PeytonWould the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind that this is a good deal less urgent now, when much of the reading matter reaches Members of Parliament only when it has become of antiquarian interest?
