HC Deb 05 November 1969 vol 790 cc999-1000
19. Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will carry out an investigation into the possible dangers to livestock health from diseases associated with the recent death of some thousands of sea birds and other recent similar epidemics affecting wild animals; and if he will consult the Home Office and the Department of Health and Social Security on steps to minimise any dangers.

Mr. John Mackie

My Department is co-operating in the investigation being conducted into the death of these birds which is being co-ordinated by the Natural Environment Research Council. This investigation is not complete, but so far there has been no evidence of death from disease.

Mr. Roberts

In view of the increasing number of problems involving the side-effects of chemicals and common factors in plants, birds, fish, animals and humans, would not my hon. Friend accept that there is scope for a permanent departmental liaison committee in order to further research generally and look at each natural disaster which occurs?

Mr. Mackie

I take my hon. Friend's point, but I think that we should await the report of the Natural Environmental Research Council I imagine that it will recommend some such permanent body if the situation should warrant it.
