§ 40. Mr. Rankinasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the amount which has been invested from public funds, to the nearest convenient date, in the housing development at Mansewood, giving the contribution made by Glasgow Corporation; what are the final estimated costs and how they will be shared between the Government and the corporation; and how many houses will be available for occupancy.
§ Mr. RossI assume that my hon. Friend's Question relates to the development at Hillpark, which comprises 509 houses. The cost as put to me for approval was £2,923,368. I cannot say what the corporation has spent so far, or what the final cost will be. I estimate that the Government's contribution by way of subsidy will be equivalent in capital terms to a little less than half of the cost. There may also be an indirect contribution through the resources element of rate support grant.
§ Mr. RankinTo those of us who live in this area, Hillpark and Mansewood are the same place. In view of the price of these houses, which were designed originally to relieve the waiting list of 90,000 at the time in Glasgow, has it been accepted that they are still to be devoted to that purpose, and will my right hon. Friend say what would be the subsidy for the rents paid by working-class people who happened to obtain one of these houses?
§ Mr. RossWhat the Government pay in subsidy is fixed by Statute, and is related to the approved cost for subsidy. What the corporation itself does as regards tenancies is a matter for the corporation. I do not know whether it has taken decision in this respect. I 1011 have heard the suggestion of a proposal, but the last time I made inquiries about it it was still only a proposal.
