HC Deb 03 November 1969 vol 790 cc635-6
40. Mr. Cordle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what study his Department has made of the role of voluntary help in the provision of health and welfare services.

Mr. John Dunwoody

We have recently been able to assist a voluntary body in mounting a study of great interest to the statutory services and hope increasingly to be able to help others who wish to undertake research of value to the services.

Mr. Cordle

Is it not clear that increasingly we shall have to fall back on calls for more voluntary effort if we are to solve the social problems which now confront us? While the Seebohm Report is being dealt with will the hon. Gentleman bear that fact in mind?

Dr. Dunwoody

Rather than using the words "fall back on voluntary effort "I would prefer to say that there is a large and so on, should we not mention our viding a great deal of help to the community. It is in this area that very much more work can be done. My Department will be happy to help any voluntary body which is trying to do this.
