HC Deb 12 March 1969 vol 779 c1363
25. Mr. Manuel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the increase in the number of places available in teacher training colleges since 1962 to the nearest available date; and how many qualified in each of these years.

Mr. Millan

The increase in places to date totals 3,945. For the rest of the Answer I will, with permission, circulate the figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Manuel

I thank my hon. Friend for that reply. Does he agree that even the number that he has given today certainly proves how successful we have been in providing more places and that it destroys completely the spurious attempts by the Opposition to say that our plans will not succeed?

Mr. Millan

The number of places has been considerably increased, and the output of qualified teachers has increased by no less than a third over the last three years.

Following are the figures:

Session Numbers successfully completing main courses
1962–63 2,443
1963–64 2,679
1964–65 2,889
1965–66 3,141
1966–67 3,384
1967–68 3,642
1968–69 4,225
