HC Deb 10 March 1969 vol 779 c962
19. Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Minister of Transport why he is experimenting with the growing of shrubs on the central reservations of motorways.

Mr. Marsh

I have already written to the hon. Member explaining in detail what we are doing.

Mr. Smith

Will the right hon. Gentleman make these views known publicly? Is he aware that this experiment is doomed to failure because of atmospheric pollution existing on motorways? Does not he recognise that the greatest contribution to motorway safety would be to put up crash barriers instead?

Mr. Marsh

There are different attractions in growing shrubs along the centre reservations. I do not agree that it is doomed to failure. Nor do those responsible think that it is doomed. The hon. Gentleman is at liberty to publish my letter if he wishes.

Mr. John Lee

Is my right hon. Friend aware that many of us welcome this experiment as a big improvement in the amenity value of motorways and that it is in no way incompatible with the provision of crash barriers?

Mr. Marsh

My hon. Friend's views are, as always, very enlightened.
