HC Deb 04 March 1969 vol 779 c191
6. Mr. Blaker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what progress has been made in reviewing the categories of goods at present outside Schedule I to the Customs (Import Deposits) Act.

Mr. Harold Lever

I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer I gave to the hon. Member for Walthamstow, West (Mr. Silvester) on 25th February.—[Vol. 778, c. 1265.]

Mr. Blaker

Does not the hon. Gentleman recall telling the House on 3rd December that the Government would look at the whole area to see what was (he best package which could be got together for use of the exemption power given by the Act? Is it not a fact that the only exemption so far is that of briarwood blocks? Is this the package which the hon. Gentleman had in mind?

Mr. Lever

We have kept the whole area of non-exempted articles under review. Up to now, the only one we have felt we could justly exempt was, as the hon. Gentleman has said, briar-wood blocks.
