HC Deb 09 June 1969 vol 784 c953
37. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Transport what will be the total expenditure in the current financial year on the A30 and A303 roads to the South-West.

Mr. Carmichael

About £2½ million.

Mr. Digby

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the roads are increasingly insufficient to deal with the very great volume of traffic there, particularly at this time of year? Will he go and take a look for himself?

Mr. Carmichael

I have been in the area and I am fully aware of the problem, which is to be found not only there but all over the country. But I agree with the hon. Gentleman that it is rather worse there at this time of the year. The total estimated value of improvement schemes for the area in progress or likely to start during 1969–70 is about £6¾ million, so that the hon. Gentleman will see that we are taking the matter seriously.
