HC Deb 03 July 1969 vol 786 cc629-30
21. Mr. Lipton

asked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that the inclusion of a £5 note in weekly pension payments is inconvenient to many retirement pensioners; and if he will arrange that adequate supplies of £1 notes are available at post offices for the payment of such pensions.

Mr. Joseph Slater

Post offices normally have adequate supplies of £1 notes which are available on request to pensioners who prefer them to £5 notes.

Mr. Lipton

Will my hon. Friend make sure that postmasters are told about this answer? Is he aware that old-age pensioners are subject to serious inconvenience by being given a £5 note when they are collecting their weekly pension? They find it difficult to change the £5 note in the small shops in which they habitually make their small purchases.

Mr. Slater

I have every sympathy with what my hon. Friend says. It is very rarely that this happens. This trouble should not arise, but if my hon. Friend will tell me of any case where this has happened, I will investigate it.
