§ 24. Mr. Biffenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make proposals for a more flexible system of exchange rates for sterling.
§ Mr. BiffenWill the right hon. Gentleman at least bear in mind the substantial and increasing advocacy of a more flexible system of exchange rates for sterling and confirm that he has now a sympathy which at least is bordering on conviction?
§ Mr. JenkinsI will confirm that I will bear in mind all considerations but I would add that I would need a great deal of convincing that we should abandon the basic stability in exchange rates which underlies the Bretton Woods system and which has worked very well for 20 years.
