HC Deb 18 February 1969 vol 778 c203
Q1. Mr. Sheldon

asked the Prime Minister if he will make a statement on the release of official information including the Official Secrets Act.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Harold Wilson)

I have nothing at present to add to what my right hon. Friend the Paymaster-General said in reply to a similar Question by my hon. Friend on the 27th January. 1969—[Vol. 776, c. 245.]

Mr. Sheldon

As the Paymaster-General was not able to make a statement on that occasion, will my right hon. Friend recall the recommendation of the Fulton Committee that an inquiry into the Official Secrets Act, which results in the limitation of debate on very important national issues, should be instituted very soon?

The Prime Minister

Yes, Sir; I take my hon. Friend's point. He will be aware of a statement I made in a speech outside the House about a month ago. We are studying this question very urgently at the moment. I hope to be able to say something about it fairly soon.
