HC Deb 13 February 1969 vol 777 cc1568-9
08. Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Prime Minister what proposals were made by him during the Commonwealth Conference to Presidents Obote, Kaunda and Nyerere in the matter of their policy regarding British citizens of Asian origin in these countries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. M. Stewart

I have been asked to reply.

I have nothing to add to the report my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister gave to the House on the 21st of January following the Commonwealth Prime Minister's Meeting.—[Vol. 776, c. 249–64.]

Mr. King

Will the Government press our point of view in this matter, and use all possible diplomatic means—and there are many at our disposal—to bring these discussions to a successful conclusion?

Mr. Stewart

Yes, Sir. As I think the hon. Gentleman knows, there was some discussion on this matter with a number of Governments at the time of, though not as part of the proceedings of, the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference. It is now a matter for bilateral discussions, which are proceeding.
