HC Deb 11 December 1969 vol 793 c630
27. Mr. Arnold Shaw

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the amount being spent on the arts in 1963–64; and what is the figure for 1969–70.

The Minister of State, Department of Education and Science (Miss Jennie Lee)

Government spending on the arts has risen from £9½43 million in 1963–64 to £21½3 million in 1969–70. These figures include £3½79 million capital expenditure on the national museums and galleries, which is borne on the Vote of the Ministry of Public Building and Works.

Mr. Shaw

Does my right hon. Friend agree that this is a question of precept and practice, and that, whereas the Opposition always talked about these things, the Labour Government have practised them.

Miss Lee

We must take it for granted that a Labour Government will he concerned with the quality of life to an exceptional extent.
