HC Deb 21 April 1969 vol 782 cc19-20
25. Mr. Doig

asked the Minister of Transport how many vehicles were tested in his Department's heavy goods testing station at Brechin to the nearest convenient date.

Mr. Carmichael

The goods vehicle testing station between Aberdeen and Perth is located at Montrose. The first tests at Montrose were introduced on 27th January, and 33 vehicles had been tested by 31st March.

Mr. Doig

Does not my hon. Friend think that in view of the small numbers of vehicles that have justified, in the Ministry's mind, a vehicle testing station at Montrose, the Ministry should reconsider its attitude towards establishing a testing station in Dundee?

Mr. Carmichael

No, Sir. An extra station was needed primarily for the benefit of those operating half way between Perth and Aberdeen to save them the unreasonably long journey for the test which would otherwise have been necessary. In consultation with the operators' association, we decided that either Brechin or Montrose was the right place, and the Ministry finally settled on Montrose.
