HC Deb 22 October 1968 vol 770 cc1075-6
13. Dame Joan Vickers

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, in view of the fact that Venezuela has already occupied the Ankoko Island, what action he plans to take in support of the representations he has received from Guyana.

Mr. Whitlock

Her Majesty's Government have already expressed to the Venezuelan Government their concern, territorial controversy between Guyana and have urged that a solution of the and Venezuela should be pursued in accordance with the terms of the Geneva Agreement of 1966.

Dame Joan Vickers

With respect to the hon. Gentleman, that does not answer my Question. I asked, if representations were made with regard to aid for this country, would it be forthcoming from Her Majesty's Government. The Guyanans have struggled hard to get a peaceful country, they have been successful and we should help them all we can.

Mr. Whitlock

The disclosure of confidential exchanges between Governments would not be appropriate. I would point out to the hon. Lady that, while we have no defence agreement with Guyana, we would naturally be very much concerned if that country were attacked. What action we would take in such event would be subject to all the circumstances prevailing at the time.
