HC Deb 15 October 1968 vol 770 cc179-80
4. Mr. Hunt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans are currently being considered by the Crown Estate Commissioners for the conversion and use of Carlton Mews.

The Minister of State, Treasury (Mr. Dick Taverne)

The Crown Estate Commissioners have approved plans for a comprehensive scheme of development for an area covering Carlton Mews and adjoining properties. This is intended primarily to provide centralised accommodation for the British Council as well as a block of flats and a substantial public underground garage.Planning consent has been given by the local planning authority, but work cannot start until an office development permit has been obtained.

Mr. Hunt

Can the Minister say how long the present fine buildings have been standing empty and why? Does the redevelopment plan mean the demolition of these buildings?

Mr. Taverne

The present buildings in Carlton Mews were designed in 1829 and completed in 1832. Great care has been taken in the general redevelopment of the area to fit the new buildings into their historic character. Approval to the present plan was given by, among others, the Royal Fine Art Commission.
