HC Deb 20 November 1968 vol 773 c1282
20. Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, in view of the fact that white veal meat cannot be produced in Great Britain, he will take steps to prevent the importation of this form of meat; and if he will investigate the general problem of the importation of foodstuffs which British agriculture is not allowed to produce.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

The production of white veal in Great Britain is not illegal. A draft code of welfare recommendations for cattle has been circulated to interested organisations for comment, and if adopted it would discourage the husbandry methods used to produce white veal in this country. In that event the Government would propose to discuss the matter with our overseas suppliers. As regards the second part of the Question, I do not think that there is a general problem.
