HC Deb 20 November 1968 vol 773 c1289
47. Dr. Gray

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what further action he now proposes following the failure of the cull of Scroby Sands seals.

Mr. John Mackie

The cull was carried out by the Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee which has statutory powers for this purpose provided our approval is first obtained. If the Committee feels that further action is desirable, it will no doubt apply to my right hon. Friend.

Dr. Gray

Is my hon. Friend aware that the offshore fishermen of Great Yarmouth complain that they were not consulted before this cull was carried out? They are now shooting the seals themselves. Should not my hon. Friend ensure that seals are killed in a humane and efficient way?

Mr. Mackie

There is no restriction on the shooting of seals by fishermen, except that there is a close season when grey seals may not be shot. If he has any reason to think that they are being shot in the close season, my hon. Friend might let us know.
