HC Deb 19 November 1968 vol 773 c1108
Q2. Mr. Tilney

asked the Prime Minister whether, in order to put the United Kingdom on the same basis as other Commonwealth countries who bear allegiance to the Crown, he will consider introducing legislation enabling Her Majesty to appoint a Governor-General of the United Kingdom.

The Prime Minister

No, Sir.

Mr. Tilney

But would not such an appointment enable Her Majesty to spend more time informally in the Commonwealth?

The Prime Minister

That is a possible argument, but there has been no pressure for this from any Commonwealth country. In these days of modern travel, Her Majesty is able to get to Commonwealth countries with remarkable speed, and the regular meetings of Commonwealth Prime Ministers in this country enable Commonwealth Prime Ministers to be entertained by Her Majesty.
