HC Deb 19 November 1968 vol 773 cc1097-8
18. Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Minister of Overseas Development if he will make a statement on the discussions with the Tunisian Government on the proposed technical assistance and aid programme for Tunisia.

Mr. Prentice

I am hoping to expand our programme of technical assistance to Tunisia and to contribute in a modest way to its development through the provision of a small amount of capital aid. Two members of my Ministry will be visiting Tunisia on 24th November for discussions with the Tunisian Government on British assistance.

Mr. Stratton Mills

While welcoming this programme, may I ask the Minister to say when it is likely that it will begin? Could he also say something about the amount of money involved and the type of technical assistance which the Government have in mind?

Mr. Prentice

As to capital aid, we had it in mind to provide a sum of the order of £50,000 a year for the next two or three years, if a suitable project can be identified. As to technical assistance, we are hoping to expand this in two main directions, one is in the teaching of English language and the other is in the provision of consultancies.
