HC Deb 19 November 1968 vol 773 c1089
8. Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Overseas Development on what grounds his decision to construct an airstrip on Vavau in Tonga was based; and if he will state cost.

Mr. Oram

The decision to build this airstrip was taken by the Government of Tonga.

The cost was estimated at £8,645. I understand that the actual cost may turn out to be about £15,000. We undertook to pay 90 per cent. of the estimate, viz £7,780.

Mr. Irvine

Has the attention of the Minister been drawn to a report of British experts who have condemned this scheme and reports which are widely circulating in the Pacific that the airstrip will never be used?

Mr. Oram

Yes, I am aware of a report about the unsuitability of this site and we have indicated to the Government of Tonga the offer of further help which we shall be able to give in consequence of the adverse nature of this report.
