HC Deb 14 May 1968 vol 764 c1023
22. Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the long-term policy of Her Majesty's Government in the field of international liquidity.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

To co-operate with other countries in the development of a monetary system which will provide for an orderly growth of liquidity so that the world's output and trade can continue to expand.

Mr. Gresham Cooke

In order to increase international liquidity to take care of trade, what is the Government's long-term policy—to raise the price of gold, or to try to get rid of gold in favour of special drawing rights?

Mr. Jenkins

The policy of the Government is to believe that the present system can and should last for a considerable time, and beyond that to move in an orderly way to secure a system which does not restrict world trade.
