HC Deb 13 May 1968 vol 764 c846
20. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what are the latest unemployment figures for Dorset; whether they show an increase or decrease on the previous figures; and how they compare with two years ago.

Mr. Fernyhough

At 8th April, 1968, 2,670 persons were registered as unemployed in Dorset. This was 40 fewer than in March 1968 and 1,120 more than in April 1966.

Mr. Digby

I am glad to have those figures, but is there not a case for the Government modifying their policy of discouraging new industry from going to Dorset?

Mr. Fernyhough

Not at the moment, because the vacancies are now arising in Dorset. I hope that that will continue, because that will inevitably lead to further falls in the present unemployment rate.
