HC Deb 01 May 1968 vol 763 cc1105-6
47. Mr. G. Campbell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what decision he has taken about the future of the Royal Scots Greys, which is at present the only Scottish cavalry regiment.

Mr. Boyden

No further decisions on the future of any major Army units have yet been taken. Details of further reductions will be given in a statement on defence policy to be published later this year.

Mr. Campbell

Since this regiment has an outstanding recruiting record and has shown itself to be a highly efficient armoured unit, besides being the only Scottish one, will the Government give an assurance that the regiment will retain its separate identity and its name?

Mr. Boyden

These factors will be taken into consideration.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

What part would the Royal Scots Greys be likely to play in the event of nuclear warfare?

Mr. Boyden

The regiment has very powerful tanks.

Mr. Ramsden

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that he has added another one to the already long list of measures which are to be announced in July? Will the Government give an undertaking that the announcement will be made in time for it to be debated by the House before we rise for the Recess?

Mr. Boyden

The right hon. Gentleman heard my right hon. Friend say precisely that in the defence debate.
