HC Deb 25 March 1968 vol 761 cc883-4
4. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Minister of Labour what estimate has been made of the number of new jobs that will be created, in Scotland and Fife respectively, in the telecommunications industry in the next 12 months.

Mr. Fernyhough

I am sorry no estimate is possible for the whole of Scotland but about 500 new jobs should be created in Fife over the next 12 months as a result of the G.E.C.-A.E.I. plans to expand their factories there and it is expected that there will be further expansion beyond that time.

Mr. Hamilton

Can the hon. Friend explain the apparent disquiet among workers there that there might be a rundown at the factory in Glenrothes? Can my hon. Friend give the proportions as between male and female jobs among this figure of 500?

Mr. Fernyhough

I am not in a position to tell my hon. Friend why there should be such concern at Glenrothes. We have no information which would substantiate such concern in any way. Nor am I in a position without notice to tell him the proportions of male and female jobs among the 500.
