§ 34. Sir A. V. Harveyasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is aware of the problem confronting research fellows studying on the continent of Europe who find they cannot live on their existing stipends due to devaluation; and what increases will be allowed to these individuals to meet the situation.
§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsYes, Sir, I am aware of the problem. The fellows have already received increases of up to 11 per cent., depending on the country in which they are studying.
§ Sir A. V. HarveyIs the hon. Lady aware that the Trustees—I speak as one—of the Fellowship are confronted with the problem of putting each application for exchange control individually? These men, who will bring back knowledge to Britain, are living on narrow limits on the Continent, where their costs have risen by 16 per cent. Will she be more reasonable in meeting the problem?
§ Mrs. WilliamsThe increases have varied because the impact of devaluation has had different consequences in different countries. For example, Denmark has partially devalued. I will certainly look at the first point raised by the hon. Gentleman.
