§ 57. Mr. Wolrige-Gordonasked the Minister of Transport what proposals she has for lowering transport charges in Scotland; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mr. CarmichaelThe Government's proposals in the Transport Bill will provide a more efficient and economic transport system to the benefit of the whole country. Alterations in charges are matters for the operators concerned, subject to the guidance and controls of prices and incomes policy.
§ Mr. Wolrige-GordonIs the hon. Gentleman aware that, although two of the worst provisions in the Transport Bill 420 were excised yesterday, nevertheless the consequent enormous rise in taxation on transport and freight charges will greatly increase industrial costs in Scotland? Is he further aware that some of the worst provisions of this Measure still remain? Will he particularly direct his attention to the 100-mile limit, which makes no sense whatever in Scotland?
§ Mr. CarmichaelYesterday's announcement by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer of increased taxation did not apply to only the freight and transport industry. To answer the hon. Gentleman's question about the 100-mile limit, we believe—and hon. Members have discussed this at great length—that the National Freight Corporation will be in a position to offer customers in certain areas cheaper door-to-door rail services; but to obtain these efficient services we consider that the 100-mile limit is, from the national point of view, imperative.
