§ 11. Mr. Molloyasked the Secretary of State for Defence what progress has been made in negotiations to transfer Northolt Airport and environs to civil authorities: and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesNo such negotiations are taking place. Following interdepartmental consultation it was concluded that R.A.F. Northolt must continue as a Service airfield, because there is no alternative airfield for some of the services operated there. The London Borough of Hillingdon and the Greater London Council were so informed in May, 1967.
§ Mr. MolloyI appreciate that my hon. Friend has been co-operative in this matter, but would he not agree that this question must arise with regard to possible future developments, and can he give an assurance today that he will be prepared to consult the local authorities when the matter arises again?
§ Mr. ReesI gladly give that assurance, but I would reiterate that the present advice that I receive is that there will be a continuing need for Northolt in the foreseeable future.
§ Mr. EmeryThe hon. Gentleman will realise that the use of this airfield for military purposes is very small in comparison with any normal use. Therefore, would he consider allowing certain civil aircraft, particularly executive aircraft, to use it for specific purposes?
§ Mr. ReesThere is a problem here because of the nearness of London Airport and the control from there. We are having discussions with the appropriate authorities on this. A small number of civil aircraft use the airfield already.
