HC Deb 19 March 1968 vol 761 cc234-5
25 and 26. Mr. Brooks

asked the Minister of Health (1) what advice he proposes to give to regional hospital boards regarding the provision of birth control information in maternity departments;

(2) what steps he is taking to ensure that those women granted abortions under the National Health Service are put in touch with the local authority health services responsible for the provision of contraceptive advice.

Mr. K. Robinson

I have asked all hospital authorities to co-operate with local authorities in the introduction of a comprehensive family planning service in all areas.

Mr. Brooks

I thank my right hon. Friend for that reply. Would he not agree that, even at a time of financial stringency, it is better to be safe than sorry and that prevention is cheaper than cure? Will he ensure that there is the maximum liaison possible between the various branches of the National Health Service dealing with birth control to see that there is not a grossly heavy burden placed upon gynaecological services in hospitals?

Mr. Robinson

Yes, Sir.

Sir D. Renton

While welcoming the Minister's original Answer, may I ask where responsibility will lie in this cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the local authorities?

Mr. Robinson

Responsibility for cooperation depends on both parties to the co-operation. I have asked local authorities to report by the end of this month on the action that they have taken or propose to secure comprehensive family planning services.

Dr. John Dunwoody

I welcome my right hon. Friend's announcement, but could he assure the House that these services will be equally available to women who use the domiciliary maternity services?

Mr. Robinson

I would hope so.

Dr. Winstanley

In addition to taking these welcome steps, will the Minister publicise the fact that the pill is freely available on a National Health Service prescription to those persons for whom the control of conception is a matter of medical necessity?

Mr. Robinson

I thought that that was generally known, but I will consider whether further publicity is desirable.
