§ Mr. GowerOn a point of order, Mr. Speaker. I beg to move the Adjournment of the House under Standing Order No. 9, to call attention to a matter of definite urgent and public importance, namely,
the policy decisions announced by the Government today regarding the future of the Falkland Islands and their people.It is a matter of deep concern, it is a matter of great public importance, and I hope sincerely that you may deem it proper to accede to this request.
§ Mr. SpeakerOrder. I understand that the hon. Member for Barry (Mr. Gower) was trying to catch my eye at the appropriate time when I called upon the right hon. Member for Belper (Mr. George Brown). In that case, I will deal with his application.
The hon. Gentleman seeks to move the Adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter that he thinks should have urgent consideration, namely,
the policy decisions announced by the Government today regarding the future of the Falkland Islands and their people.The House will remember that, under revised Standing Order No. 9, agreed to on 14th November, 1967, Mr. Speaker is directed to take into account the several factors set out in that Order and to give no reasons for his decision. In the light of the new provisions, I now rule that the hon. Gentleman's submission does not fall within the provisions of the revised Standing Order, and, therefore, I cannot submit his application to the House.
