HC Deb 08 March 1968 vol 760 c837
Mr. Jopling

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, and that of the House, I wish to present a Petition which has been organised by the Lancaster Canal Trust. It commands wide support in the North-West of England, particularly in North Lancashire and Westmorland. It asks that the Ministry of Transport, when constructing the M6 Motorway, make navigable culverts when crossing the Lancaster Canal so that this incredibly beautiful waterway can be preserved for future generations.

This Petition relates to one signed by over 1,550 people which I presented to the Minister of Transport yesterday.

May I request that the Clerk read the Petition to the House?

Petition was read as follows: The honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled:

The humble Petition of the Lancaster Canal Trust showeth that the Ministry of Transport propose to culvert the Lancaster Canal where the M6 Motorway extension and associated roadworks cross the Canal north of Tewitfield. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that they desire that the beautiful northern reaches of the Canal—probably the finest length of waterway in England and including the Hincaster tunnel—should be re-opened without impediment to navigation. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray

To lie upon the Table.
