asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he expects to announce the name of the new Chairman of the University Grants Committee.

Does the right hon. Gentleman appreciate the widespread appreciation of the work of the retiring chairman of the University Grants Committee which is shared on both sides of the House? Will he confirm that he will not be restricted to the university world in his difficult task of finding a successor?

Mr. Short

I agree with what the hon. Gentleman has said about Sir John Wolfenden. The answer to his second question is, "Yes".
