HC Deb 25 June 1968 vol 767 cc218-9
8. Dr. John Dunwoody

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he will take to encourage Government employees to take their holidays outside the peak season.

Mr. Harold Lever

I do not think that such encouragement is either necessary or practicable.

Dr. Dunwoody

Would my hon. Friend consider this matter again, because if he could encourage Government employees to do this we would avoid the near shut down of some Government Departments in August and help the economy of the tourist areas considerably in the out-of-season period?

Mr. Lever

Civil servants must have the same measure of choice in these matters as other citizens.

Sir C. Osbome

And Members of Parliament.

Mr. Lever

There is a limit to what we should properly do in the direction suggested by my hon. Friend.
