HC Deb 20 June 1968 vol 766 cc1294-5
26. Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if the Medical Research Council trial, which has proved the effectiveness of vaccination against measles, included information on the value of vaccination against german measles.

Mr. Edward Short

No, Sir. Rubella, or german measles, is an unrelated illness, but the Council is organising a separate series of trials of rubella vaccines.

Mr. Pavitt

Will the Medical Research Council take into consideration the researches done two years ago in America where they felt that they had the answer to this problem? Since this is an important factor in causing deafness, will my right hon. Friend expedite the work being done by the Medical Research Council?

Mr. Short

I am sure that the Medical Research Council is aware of the urgency of this matter. But there is a particular hazard for women in the early stages of pregnancy. I am sure that my hon. Friend is aware of that. The matter must be treated carefully, and I am sure that the Council is aware of the need to find a solution.
