HC Deb 12 June 1968 vol 766 cc225-6
29. Mr. Goodhew

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has made for the utilisation of plastic armour panels to protect the crew and electronic installations in Phantom aircraft.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The use of plastic armour panels is one of several measures under study to improve the survivability of the Phantom.

Mr. Goodhew

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that in Vietnam the Americans have learned that the protection of crew and vital electronics can be of great value? Will he take a close look at the Bristol Aeroplane Company plastics armour, which is lightweight and seems very effective?

Mr. Rees

We are aware of the advantages of this type of armour and also, of course, of the experience in different parts of the world in different operational environments.
