HC Deb 25 July 1968 vol 769 cc980-1
Q7. Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Prime Minister if he will now seek to abolish the office of Postmaster-General.

The Prime Minister

If the hon. Member is concerned with the situation which will arise when the Post Office is reorganised I would ask him to await the legislation which will be brought before the House in due course.

Mr. Evelyn King

As there have been three Postmasters-General in 23 months and one lasted only three months has not the Prime Minister some personal responsibility for this and will he consider obtaining responsible management for this great Department rather than using the post as a political prize?

The Prime Minister

The hon. Member will, of course, be aware of the circumstances in which it became necessary to move my right hon. Friend the present Minister of Power, but surely the hon. Gentleman is not suggesting that the very long period we had up to 1964, under a then Postmaster-General whom the Conservatives since then have tried with some success to forget, was better than what has happened under this Government, and still less would justify the dozen Defence Ministers in 13 years.
