HC Deb 25 July 1968 vol 769 c970
40. Mr. Palmer

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will reconsider his decision to withdraw the proposal for a new comprehensive school at Daventry Road, Bristol, from the 1968–69 building programme, in view of the urgent educational needs of this part of the city of Bristol.

Miss Bacon

The local education authority did not plan to start work on this school until March 1969 and deferment until 1969–70 need have little effect on the date of completion.

Mr. Palmer

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this part of Bristol is isolated from the general comprehensive development, which is a great handicap to the children living there?

Miss Bacon

I fully understand that, but the year for school building runs from 1st April to 31st March, and as this project was not ready to start until March 1969, with our limited resources, it was better to put in a school from some other area which was ready to start and to look at this for the 1969–70 programme.
