HC Deb 25 July 1968 vol 769 cc971-2
46. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why he has now withdrawn his approval for the urgent work previously authorised at St. Paul's Church of England School, Beverley Boys' School and Bonner Hill Secondary Girls' School in the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames; and what account he took of the disagreement over secondary school reorganisation in making these decisions.

Miss Bacon

These projects have not found places in the reconstructed school building programme for 1968–69. My decision had nothing to do with secondary reorganisation since the schools were originally submitted prior to the circular on secondary reorganisation and included in a programme.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Is the right hon. Lady aware that work on these schools is most urgently needed and the local authority concerned was given an indication that they would be improved in the second part of this year? What is the reason for putting back the provision of desperately needed educational buildings of this kind?

Miss Bacon

We had a debate on this matter this morning. As the right hon. Gentleman knows, we had to take out of this year's school building programme allocations which had been already made towards raising the school leaving age. This is the reason why some projects had to be postponed.
