§ 10. Mr. Martenasked the Minister of Health how many of the 1,600 households estimated to be eligible to receive disabled drivers' cars under the categories announced on 15th February, 1967, have actually received them to date.
§ Mr. MartenIs it not rather curious and disturbing that so few applications have been received? Does this mean that, when the Minister gets his new powers under the Bill, he will be able to make a much wider extension of the categories entitled to motor cars?
§ Mr. SnowIt is a little premature to make that assumption. We have some reason to believe that, with the increased publicity about this, stemming from my right hon. Friend's statement in 1967, an increasing number of applications is being made. The position certainly needs watching.
§ Mr. FortescueCan the hon. Gentleman assure the House that this apparent dilatoriness in dealing with applications does not mean that every effort will not be made under the Health Services and Public Health Bill to publicise the new services available?
§ Mr. SnowIf there is any need to publicise these provisions, we will look at it. My impression is that the initiative must in the event be taken by the disabled person or his friends.
