HC Deb 25 January 1968 vol 757 c573
34. Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Postmaster-General if he will make use of public service passenger vehicles, where possible, instead of mail vans, as in Skye, to make more viable a public passenger service otherwise impossible.

Mr. Joseph Slater

Yes Sir. Mails are already conveyed on well over 600 bus routes in Scotland and other parts of the United Kingdom, and we shall continue to use them whenever they meet our needs satisfactorily and economically.

Mr. Atkins

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for that reply. May I ask him f he is aware that in many cases rural bus services will be saved by this kind of integration?

Mr. Slater

I must point out that mails must be conveyed at suitable times of the day and there must be adequate accommodation to afford proper security.
