17. Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what contribution to home beef production he expects from the dairy herd in 1968.

Mr. Hoy

I expect that some 70 per cent. of the beef produced from homebred animals in 1968 will come from the dairy herd.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

Would not the best encouragement to dairy farmers to produce more meat be to give them more opportunity at the same time to replace some of the vast quantities of imported dairy produce?

Mr. Hoy

That is a matter of opinion. I was replying to the hon. Gentleman's question by giving the figure he sought.
