HC Deb 23 January 1968 vol 757 cc200-1
22. Mr. Roebuck

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement about the consultations he has had with representatives of the United States Government with a view to securing the demonetisation of gold.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I have had no such consultations.

Mr. Roebuck

Might not the step indicated in my Question well curb the monkey tricks of General de Gaulle? Is it not rather sad that my right hon. Friend is prepared to act as General de Gaulle's poodle and to kick in the teeth Commonwealth Prime Ministers from South-East Asia in pursuing his curious doctrine of wanting to get into Europe?

Mr. Jenkins

My hon. Friend, who has strong views on this and on many other matters, seems to be raising a large number of issues which do not arise directly from the question whether I should or should not consult the United States Government about the demonetisation of gold.
