HC Deb 18 January 1968 vol 756 c1945
26. Mr. Sheldon

asked the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs what estimate he has made of the increase in the number of jobs in the development areas attributable to the regional employment premium.

Mr. Shore

About 100,000 new jobs in the development areas over a period of years.

Mr. Sheldon

Can my right hon. Friend give an indication of the number of jobs which he expects to get in the first year, so that we might be able to calculate the cost per job and make sure that this is the most effective way of spending the money?

Mr. Shore

This is a new instrument of policy, and the first payments were made in October of last year. I think that it is too soon to begin to try to assess its short-term impact.
