HC Deb 17 January 1968 vol 756 c1763
11. Mr. Monro

asked the Minister of Transport what estimate she has made of the additional costs which will be borne by the manufacturers of pressure vessels in Scotland by the abnormal load charge on the transport of their products.

Mr. Carmichael

I regret that this information is not available.

Mr. Monro

Is the Minister aware that that is most unsatisfactory? Is he further aware that it will cost between £2,000 and £4,000 extra to take these vessels to the South of England? Does he realise that it will be an impossible burden on Scottish heavy industry?

Mr. Carmichael

The hon. Member asked specifically for the extra costs involved in pressure vessels moving from Scotland to England. I should say that the movement of about 3,000 extra large, or heavy loads are required to be reported to the Ministry each year. It would be possible, although it would be a lengthy process, to pick out exactly how many of these authorisations applied to pressure vessels from Scotland.
