§ 28. Mr. William Priceasked the Minister of Transport what is the total number of traffic signs now in use.
§ Mr. CarmichaelThe regulations prescribe six basic types of sign, including road markings. Within these types there are 270 different signs, but many are simple variants, for instance of direction signs.
§ Mr. PriceWould my hon. Friend agree that before any new signs are introduced we should have time to get accustomed to those that we have now?
§ Mr. CarmichaelThe evidence is that poeple are becoming much more accustomed to them. The basic understanding should be that circular signs mean instruction, triangular signs mean a warning, and rectangular signs mean information. The signs were designed after consultation, following the Warboys Committee's Report, to bring them into line with the signs used in the rest of Europe.
